Creating a budget isn’t as scary or difficult as you think. All you have to do is sit down and look at your numbers, evaluate how much you earn and what your expenses are. A budget will help make sure you don’t spend more than you earn, and it creates excellent spending habits for the future – because debt and bad credit is a pitfall we should all try to avoid.
Here are 3 tips to creating a budget:
Identify your expenses
Look over your account and credit card statements from the last 12 months, and then plan out your expenses for the next few months. You should check in on your spending to make sure you stay on track – which you can do on a weekly or monthly basis. Structure your budget with your weekly, monthly and annual expenses – including your savings and investments. Don’t forget about rent, mortgage payments, car payments, etc.
Distinguish your needs from your wants
Keeping track of your spending will help get rid of unnecessary expenses. For example, skip your morning coffee spot and make your coffee at home instead; a little bit of saving goes a long way!
Don’t spend more than you earn
As obvious as this seems, it’s very easy to spend more than we’re earning each month – don’t worry, we’ve all been there. So plan ahead! Identify your expenses, cover your bases, and avoid over spending as much as you can.
